2021-06-09Insights from a Lifetime in Waste & Recycling
In Waste360's latest episode of their NothingWasted! podcast, the hosts chat with Chaz Miller, industry veteran and longtime former director at National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA). Now semi-retired, Miller has spent 40+ years in the waste and recycling industry, 30 of them with NWRA. 2021-06-09EPA Announces Public Listening Sessions and Trainings on Upcoming Oil and Natural Gas Methane Rule
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is taking the first step to develop a proposed rule to reduce methane and other harmful pollutants from new and existing sources in the oil and natural gas industry, beginning with a broad public outreach effort to gather community and stakeholder input. These activities include holding training sessions on the rulemaking process and how to participate in it, convening listening sessions for stakeholders and opening a public docket for pre-proposal comments. 2021-06-09EPA Relaunches Climate Indicators Website Showing How Climate Change is Impacting Peoples’ Health and Environment
For the first time in four years, EPA is relaunching its Climate Change Indicators in the United States website for the public. This comprehensive resource presents compelling and clear evidence of changes to our climate reflected in rising temperatures, ocean acidity, sea level rise, river flooding, droughts, heat waves, and wildfires, among other indicators. The site also features an enhanced user experience with interactive data-exploration tools offering a closer look at graphs, maps, and figures, along with an overview of the importance of indicators and how climate change can affect human health and the environment. 2021-06-09EPA Researchers Release Updates to Environmental Quality Index
A look at the broader environmental context can help researchers better understand health outcomes and how they relate to cumulative environmental exposures. EPA researchers created the Environmental Quality Index (EQI) to do just that. The EQI is a national-level index that helps improve understanding of how multiple environmental conditions affect the 3,143 counties across the U.S. Originally published in 2014 with data for the period 2000-2005, the EQI team has recently released an update for the 2006-2010 period. The update offers new data sources that were not available for the first edition, as well as additional breakdowns of data layers. [ full text ]

2021-06-09CLASIC Tool Predicts Costs, Co-Benefits, and Climate Resilience for Stormwater Infrastructure
Stormwater project designers often have numerous design and configuration options that would match the parameters of a project site. Their challenge becomes identifying the options that will provide maximum environmental, social, and economic benefits at minimal costs. A new decision-support tool developed by the Water Research Foundation (WRF; Denver) aims to make that challenge easier. WRF’s Community-enabled Lifecycle Analysis of Stormwater Infrastructure Costs (CLASIC) tool, released in April, lets users weigh the long-term pros and cons of different infrastructure designs. Using climatological, geographic, and historical data, the free tool also enables users to quantify factors beyond stormwater management such as community co-benefits and climate-change resilience.
